What Is a Root Canal?

If detected early on, tooth decay can be addressed with a simple filling or crown to remove the damage and restore function. However, when decay spreads beyond the outer layers and affects the inner portion of the tooth (pulp chamber), you will likely need a root canal in order to save the tooth from extraction. Root canal therapy is an endodontic treatment performed by our highly trained general dentists at Avon Dental Group. During the treatment process, we remove the decayed pulp from the tooth, disinfect the pulp and canal(s) of the tooth roots, and place a special filling material to seal the tooth. A root canal may be recommended for teeth that become internally damaged due to a deep cavity, crack, or trauma.

If you believe you need to have a root canal, we understand that you may have reservations about the procedure. A root canal is a very common dental procedure, yet many people avoid going to the dentist for a toothache because of common dental fears. Our dedicated, trusted team strives to ensure you remain comfortable during your root canal visit, but we also provide several methods of sedation to help you fully relax. Contact Avon Dental Group to arrange a consult with one of our experienced dentists to learn more about root canals and sedation dentistry.

Common Signs and Symptoms

There are a number of symptoms that may point to the need for root canal treatment. The most obvious signs are tooth or jaw pain, a pimple-like bump on the gums around the tooth, jaw or facial swelling, and discoloration of the affected tooth. You may also notice pain or pressure when biting down or sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. If the infection is not addressed, it may become increasingly painful as it seeps into the underlying bone. If the infection reaches your bloodstream, you may be at risk for further general health complications. Please schedule an appointment at Avon Dental Group if you have any of these signs or symptoms.

The Treatment Process

Before the procedure, our caring team will discuss your sedation options to help you enjoy a relaxed visit. We do not want you to feel anxious, nervous, or fearful during your appointment and use a gentle approach toward all types of care. Some patients opt for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral-conscious sedation to help keep them stress-free during root canal treatment. A local anesthetic will also be administered to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues. We deeply understand and empathize with those who have dental phobias and will help you make the appropriate decision about your sedation needs.

To perform an endodontic procedure, our dentists will make a small opening in the top of the tooth and carefully extract the infected pulp. From there, the inner chamber will be thoroughly cleaned to eliminate any remaining decay, damaged structure, and bacteria and the canals will be reshaped. The tooth will then be filled with a special material to seal and protect the area.

After Endodontic Treatment

Based on the type of sedation that was chosen, you might need to have a responsible adult drive you home following your procedure. Your mouth may feel sensitive or swollen, but this should not last more than a few days and can be reduced with over-the-counter pain relievers. We recommend that you arrange for a follow-up appointment a few weeks after your root canal. We will examine the area to make sure the infection is gone and ensure that health has been reestablished. Since a root canal removes the nerves and blood supply within the pulp, a root canal renders a tooth no longer vital and at a higher risk for breaking or crumbling. In most cases, a custom dental crown will be placed once the tooth is healed to add strength and protection.

Is a Root Canal Covered?

A portion of your root canal therapy may be covered by your dental insurance. Our team will review your coverage to help you maximize your benefits and let you know of any estimated personal costs. To help patients cover any out-of-pocket expenses, Avon Dental Group is happy to accept a range of payment methods, including no-interest financing options through CareCredit plans.
