About Dental Exams
When it comes to your smile, being proactive with routine care can allow for early identification of potential problems and help minimize your long-term dental needs. Our caring dental team recommends scheduling a dental exam for yourself and your whole family on a regular basis, which can enable us to take a more conservative approach to care. During exams, we thoroughly screen for signs of oral cancer, tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral conditions. Your bite and jaw will also be evaluated to further determine if any areas of your mouth require treatment. A series of x-rays may also be taken so that we may examine your bone, tooth roots, and portions of your mouth that cannot be seen upon visual examination. Comprehensive dental examinations at Avon Dental Group incorporate the latest in advanced technology to evaluate your overall and oral health. If you live in or near Avon, CT, we invite you to make an appointment for a dental examination at Avon Dental Group.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer is an abnormal growth of cells that can occur anywhere in the mouth, including the jawbone, gums, lips, tongue, throat, palate, cheeks, the floor of the mouth, and salivary glands. Every dental exam at Avon Dental Group includes an oral cancer screening to check for early signs of abnormalities, precancerous lesions, and oral cancer, which may present as sores, lesions, lumps, or other irregularities. Our team will also palpate the neck, chin, and jaw. If any areas of concern are discovered, a biopsy may be performed or you may be referred to a trusted specialist for further care.
Dental Exam Reviews
"I have been coming to ADG for 12 years. They are so good that even now that I live two hours away, I still drive there for my dental care. Dr. Knowles is the best dentist I’ve ever had. He is officially recognized among his peers as one of the top dentists in Connecticut. My teeth need a lot of looking after and I only go to ADG for dentistry and cleaning visits. Dr. Knowles’ work is of the highest quality, and he treats everyone - patients and staff - with great courtesy and kindness. He is very gentle and patient and he makes sure my comfort is addressed, and he is attentive and responsive to my concerns. John is my hygienist. Like everyone at ADG he is friendly, courteous, gentle, and professional. He knows his job backwards and forwards and he listens to his patients and always does a wonderful job. They take every possible precaution to keep the office safer in a post-Covid world. The dentists have gowns, hats, masks and face shields and everyone in the office is masked. The waiting room chairs are distant from each other and the reception has plexiglas dividers. Everyone on staff is dedicated to the needs of the patient, and they are friendly and professional across the board. Every time I go there I immediately sense the incredible teamwork in the office. I’ve been recommending ADG to people for years: happy to do so on Google."- P.B. / Google / Mar 19, 2021
Who Needs a Dental Exam?
Patients of every age should receive a dental exam at least once each year. Many common issues, such as gum disease (the leading cause of tooth loss), may not always present with noticeable signs or symptoms. When dental issues are detected early, you may have a greater chance of treatment success and often with less invasive options.
The ADA (American Dental Association) suggests that children visit a dentist before their first birthday. A member of our team at Avon Dental Group can help with problems like using pacifiers, teething, and baby bottle tooth decay. We can also provide tips on how to care for your child's mouth so they establish good oral health habits early in life. Dental exams are also vital for children as their jaws develop and permanent teeth erupt.
The Exam Process
After we review your medical history and talk with you about any oral concerns you may have, we will begin your dental examination with an overall evaluation of your teeth, tongue, soft tissues, and other dental checkpoints. Advanced digital x-rays and intraoral pictures may be taken so that we can evaluate for decay, bone loss, and other hidden concerns. A screening for gum disease will be conducted along with an evaluation of your head, neck, jaw, temporomandibular joints (TMJ), and bite. Any fillings, crowns, dentures, or other restorations that you may have will be examined to assess the fit, wear, and integrity. Once we have completed your exam, we will then review our findings and discuss your treatment options.
In general, routine dental exams are completed at least once each year, typically during your dental cleaning visits. If you have treatment needs, our dentists will present your options and help you select the appropriate course of care. Tips on how you can best care for your teeth and gums at home with a good daily home care regimen may also be provided during your exam visit. Before you leave, our team will help you schedule any follow-up procedures, including your next routine dental exam and cleaning visit.
Since a dental exam is critical to your health, it is commonly covered by insurance. Our office will review your dental insurance plan to help you understand your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs. If you do not have insurance, Avon Dental Group accepts several payment options, including no-interest financing. Every member of our team is happy to work with you to help ensure you enjoy good dental health.
