About Athletic Mouth Guards
Our team at Avon Dental Group is passionate about helping patients of all ages safeguard their oral health and enjoy the benefits of a healthy, happy smile. When you or your child plays a high-impact sport (like soccer, football, boxing, baseball, hockey, or wrestling), our general dentists highly recommend wearing a custom mouth guard to protect your gums, teeth, and jaw against damage. Unlike store-bought generic mouth guards, custom mouth guards from Avon Dental Group are crafted to a precise fit for each individual, making it more effective and comfortable. If you or your loved ones engage is high or even low-impact sports, we invite you to contact our Avon, CT practice to learn more about your options for custom-made mouth guards.
Who Should Wear a Mouth Guard?
Professionally made mouth guards are extremely important to wear if you or your child participates in a sport with a high risk of injury or frequent contact. Many of our patients are active in volleyball, martial arts, football, softball, soccer, hockey, wrestling, and other contact sports. A professional, custom mouth guard can be particularly beneficial for those who have braces or dental restorations, which may cause harm to the soft tissues of the mouth or become damaged during impact. Mouth guards have also been proven to protect the smiles of athletes in non-contact sports (jogging, yoga, and weight lifting) by decreasing tension on the jaw and temporomandibular joints (TMJ). Since a custom mouth guard is made especially for each individual's teeth and jaw, it typically fits better and lasts longer than stock or boil-and-bite mouth protectors available at sporting goods stores.

"I have been coming to ADG for 12 years. They are so good that even now that I live two hours away, I still drive there for my dental care. Dr. Knowles is the best dentist I’ve ever had. He is officially recognized among his peers as one of the top dentists in Connecticut. My teeth need a lot of looking after and I only go to ADG for dentistry and cleaning visits. Dr. Knowles’ work is of the highest quality, and he treats everyone - patients and staff - with great courtesy and kindness. He is very gentle and patient and he makes sure my comfort is addressed, and he is attentive and responsive to my concerns. John is my hygienist. Like everyone at ADG he is friendly, courteous, gentle, and professional. He knows his job backwards and forwards and he listens to his patients and always does a wonderful job. They take every possible precaution to keep the office safer in a post-Covid world. The dentists have gowns, hats, masks and face shields and everyone in the office is masked. The waiting room chairs are distant from each other and the reception has plexiglas dividers. Everyone on staff is dedicated to the needs of the patient, and they are friendly and professional across the board. Every time I go there I immediately sense the incredible teamwork in the office. I’ve been recommending ADG to people for years: happy to do so on Google."- P.B. / Google / Jul 15, 2020
"Had a good visit. Technician was informed that I was on a blood thinner and was careful in the cleaning procedure. However, I did not like the brushed on fluoride because it did not dissolve and left a lingering bad taste in my mouth. I had to peak off the waxy residue and use mouthwash to try to get rid of the taste hours later than the treatment. My stomach felt upset too. Next time I will go back to the fluoride rinse."- B.C. / Facebook / Jul 10, 2020
The Treatment Process
To create your mouth guard, our dentists will take digital or physical impressions of your mouth, which will show the teeth and gums in great detail. Our dental laboratory will use your impressions to custom-craft your mouth guard from durable, high-quality materials. Your guard can even be personalized in your school or team colors. Once your custom mouth guard is ready, we will have you return for a quick visit to have it fitted. Our skilled dentists will make sure your mouth guard fits securely in your mouth and is comfortable to wear.
Caring for Custom Mouth Guards
When you receive your mouth guard, it is crucial to wear it while playing sports or if your mouth needs additional protection during physical activities. Caring for your mouth guard will be critical in maintaining its lifespan. It is best kept in a secure place and should be cleaned before and after use. Our team will explain the ideal method to clean your mouth guard depending on the type of material from which it is made. We encourage you to bring it to each dental appointment so one of our dentists can inspect its current state and ensure it is still providing protection for your smile.
Is It Covered by Insurance?
Avon Dental Group accepts a wide range of dental insurance policies and will review your plan to determine if any coverage for your athletic mouth guard is available. To help make covering your care as easy as possible for your family, we can review your payment choices and we can help you apply for no-interest financing plans if you incur any out-of-pocket expense.
