Fluoride Treatment in Avon, CT

About Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride's importance in improving dental enamel has been acknowledged by the ADA (American Dental Association), the WHO (World Health Organization), the American Medical Association (AMA), and several other professional organizations. Communities that add fluoride to their drinking water experience fewer incidences of tooth decay among residents. A mineral found in soil and some foods, fluoride helps to strengthen bones and teeth. Professional fluoride treatments at Avon Dental Group may help to protect against the development of tooth decay in patients of all ages, especially children and adults at a higher risk. Who should Have Fluoride?

Professional fluoride treatments may be given to children, teens, and adults, though they are most commonly recommended for younger patients to protect their teeth and the jaw develops. Fluoride treatments may also be suggested for older patients who do not drink fluoridated water, those who have a history of tooth decay, and any individual who is more prone to developing cavities. Avon Dental Group provides varying formulas of fluoride, which may include gels, rinses, and varnishes in a range of flavors.

The Fluoride Treatment Process

Fluoride treatments are usually performed twice a year, following your professional dental cleaning and exam. When you select your flavor, a team member will prepare the fluoride treatment as either a foam, rinse, gel, or paint-on varnish. The treatment will be left on the teeth for a short period, giving the enamel time to uptake the fluoride before it is removed. Our hygienists will use suction to help remove any excess fluoride after the procedure since you may not be able to rinse, drink, or eat for at least half an hour after.

Had a good visit. Technician was informed that I was on a blood thinner and was careful in the cleaning procedure. However, I did not like the brushed on fluoride because it did not dissolve and left a lingering bad taste in my mouth. I had to peak off the waxy residue and use mouthwash to try to get rid of the taste hours later than the treatment. My stomach felt upset too. Next time I will go back to the fluoride rinse.

Stomach problems can occur if fluoride is swallowed but this should subside about a day after your treatment. For certain patients, our dentists may prescribe fluoride tablets to take between treatments. Since it is toxic in high amounts, adults should be cautious and prevent children from gaining access to fluoride supplements. While these treatments help to strengthen the teeth, it is still essential to maintain regular oral care at home by brushing with fluoridated toothpaste and keeping up with daily flossing. Our team will continue to assess the need for ongoing fluoride applications during each of your family's routine teeth cleaning and exam visits.
