Crown Lengthening in Avon, CT

What Is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a periodontal procedure our multi-skilled general dentists perform to enhance smile aesthetics or facilitate restorative procedures for our patients. Aesthetic crown lengthening, also known as "gummy smile treatment," removes excess gum tissue from around teeth in the smile zone to reveal a wider, more attractive grin. In some cases, our Avon, CT team may reduce a portion of the gums and underlying bone from around a damaged tooth to create enough visible tooth structure upon which to place a crown, filling, or other restoration. For more information on how crown lengthening might improve the quality or health of your smile, get in touch with Avon Dental Group and make your consultation appointment with one of our dentists.

Are You a Candidate?

Candidates for crown lengthening are generally in good overall health, particularly when it comes to the gums. Conditions like periodontal (gum) disease may need to be treated before crown lengthening is performed. Aesthetic crown lengthening is recommended for cosmetic reasons, often to address a "gummy" smile or the look of short teeth. In these instances, excess gum tissue is removed to balance the proportion of visible enamel to gums and offer an even gumline that frames the teeth in an attractive way. Functional crown lengthening may be required to place a dental restoration, such as when decay or damage occurs at or below the gumline or a greater amount of visible tooth structure is needed in order to fully restore the tooth.

Crown Lengthening Treatment

To begin the procedure, a local anesthetic is used to numb the gum tissues and make the process comfortable. Sedation technique can be discussed with our team during your initial consultation to help keep you calm and comfortable during your procedure. When you are ready, your gum tissue will be reduced to reveal more of your tooth structure and the gumline will be sculpted for a lifted and even look. In some cases, we may need to shave down the underlying bone to further enhance your treatment results.

TLDR: Dr. Solof is awesome. I’ve gotten a lot of fillings over the years (yes, shame on me)— whenever I had fillings done in the past with other dentists, it always took weeks to “get used to” my new bite— I thought this was just part of getting fillings. I came to Dr. Solof with a bunch of new cavities. He tackled them over 3 sessions and each time, my bite was not impacted in the slightest. Dr. Solof takes great care to make sure the fillings are shaped perfectly for the patient’s bite. Highly recommend.
