What Is Crown Lengthening?
Crown lengthening is a periodontal procedure our multi-skilled general dentists perform to enhance smile aesthetics or facilitate restorative procedures for our patients. Aesthetic crown lengthening, also known as "gummy smile treatment," removes excess gum tissue from around teeth in the smile zone to reveal a wider, more attractive grin. In some cases, our Avon, CT team may reduce a portion of the gums and underlying bone from around a damaged tooth to create enough visible tooth structure upon which to place a crown, filling, or other restoration. For more information on how crown lengthening might improve the quality or health of your smile, get in touch with Avon Dental Group and make your consultation appointment with one of our dentists.

"I have been coming to ADG for 12 years. They are so good that even now that I live two hours away, I still drive there for my dental care. Dr. Knowles is the best dentist I’ve ever had. He is officially recognized among his peers as one of the top dentists in Connecticut. My teeth need a lot of looking after and I only go to ADG for dentistry and cleaning visits. Dr. Knowles’ work is of the highest quality, and he treats everyone - patients and staff - with great courtesy and kindness. He is very gentle and patient and he makes sure my comfort is addressed, and he is attentive and responsive to my concerns. John is my hygienist. Like everyone at ADG he is friendly, courteous, gentle, and professional. He knows his job backwards and forwards and he listens to his patients and always does a wonderful job. They take every possible precaution to keep the office safer in a post-Covid world. The dentists have gowns, hats, masks and face shields and everyone in the office is masked. The waiting room chairs are distant from each other and the reception has plexiglas dividers. Everyone on staff is dedicated to the needs of the patient, and they are friendly and professional across the board. Every time I go there I immediately sense the incredible teamwork in the office. I’ve been recommending ADG to people for years: happy to do so on Google."- P.B. / Google / Jul 15, 2020
"Had a good visit. Technician was informed that I was on a blood thinner and was careful in the cleaning procedure. However, I did not like the brushed on fluoride because it did not dissolve and left a lingering bad taste in my mouth. I had to peak off the waxy residue and use mouthwash to try to get rid of the taste hours later than the treatment. My stomach felt upset too. Next time I will go back to the fluoride rinse."- B.C. / Facebook / Jul 10, 2020
Are You a Candidate?
Candidates for crown lengthening are generally in good overall health, particularly when it comes to the gums. Conditions like periodontal (gum) disease may need to be treated before crown lengthening is performed. Aesthetic crown lengthening is recommended for cosmetic reasons, often to address a "gummy" smile or the look of short teeth. In these instances, excess gum tissue is removed to balance the proportion of visible enamel to gums and offer an even gumline that frames the teeth in an attractive way. Functional crown lengthening may be required to place a dental restoration, such as when decay or damage occurs at or below the gumline or a greater amount of visible tooth structure is needed in order to fully restore the tooth.
Crown Lengthening Treatment
To begin the procedure, a local anesthetic is used to numb the gum tissues and make the process comfortable. Sedation technique can be discussed with our team during your initial consultation to help keep you calm and comfortable during your procedure. When you are ready, your gum tissue will be reduced to reveal more of your tooth structure and the gumline will be sculpted for a lifted and even look. In some cases, we may need to shave down the underlying bone to further enhance your treatment results.
After the Procedure
Following your crown lengthening treatment, your mouth might feel tender or slightly swollen. Over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses can be utilized to reduce any discomfort. You may also prefer to consume a diet of soft foods until your gums heal. Our clinical team will provide you with instructions on how to care for your teeth and gums after your crown lengthening procedure. In some cases, you may need to schedule a follow-up appointment at Avon Dental Group to assess your healing. We will continue to monitor the overall health of your mouth during each of your routine dental cleaning and exam visits with our team.
Dental insurance coverage for crown lengthening may vary among policies and depending on the reason for the procedure. In any case, our financial team will contact your provider to learn about your specific benefits and help you find a convenient payment solution for any personal costs. Our practice is pleased to partner with CareCredit for no-interest payment options to make dental treatments more affordable for patients in Avon, CT and the surrounding communities.
